fragile bank lending has remained sluggish across advanced economies with europe's economy contract in the united states headed for a fiscal cliff and emerging economies like india and china also slowing down i.m.f. leaders are calling on policymakers to address the threat. in their economies all around the world the world we're witnessing the collapse of corporate globalism the only question left is just how messy will it get before working people around the world come together to forge a new economy for the twenty first century that question is especially important in greece where tens of thousands of demonstrators six's streets today to protest their financial overlord german chancellor angela merkel greek attempts to ban protester in merkel's visit. were unsuccessful and more than twenty five thousand people still turned out to demonstrate merkel attempted to express solidarity with the greek people acknowledging that it's been a very difficult phase but part of the journey has already been accomplished she

was met with signs that read merkel we are free nation and not your colony to german policy makers like merkel who are shoving austerity down the throats of the greek people it might all just seem like numbers on a spreadsheet to the greeks it's life and death according to some estimates as many as three thousand five hundred greeks have committed suicide because of financial hardship since this economic crisis began austerity is not a bloodless game and republicans here in the united states need to learn that lesson as well that there's another creep danger creeping out of austerity that we all need to be aware. tough economic times make people desperate and in that despair they sometimes turn to liars hustlers and outright psychopaths who promise them everything well actually plotting to wipe them out clean them and consider the

economic chaos in the united states from chicago to selma after the civil war at war had wrought incredible damage and on top of that the economy was changing at a blinding speed because of both the industrial revolution and abraham lincoln having subsidized coast to coast rail lines white people were out of work and in crisis so the k.k.k. came along and promised to help them the same that all their problems were because of those freed slaves taking their jobs that one day their neighborhoods and their governments would be run by those same free slaves just like the very first feature length movie ever made birth of a nation check that out if you want to see the ultimate k.k.k. recruiting film similarly in europe after world war one the chaos in germany caused by the treaty of versailles reparations brought the german middle class to its knees and adolf hitler promised to help in spain italy it was a similar story as those nations struggle to recover from world war one leading to the rise of franco and mussolini so here we are now with

a serious economic crisis in the western world caused by american and european banks toure's stealing trillions of dollars but in greece which doesn't have its own currency anymore and chose to use the international bankers euro ever p. diddly gone along with the bankers demand that greece take money from their poor and working class people to make the already rich banks toure's even richer than the greek people are really really upset. so now in comes the greek reincarnation of the nazi party a hard right bunch called the golden dawn that not only wants to go after all the immigrants in the country but also wants to go after the banks toure's their fashions literally they call themselves that and the logo is a variation on the swastika but they want to go after the banks toure's and in large part because of that in the last election they got eighteen seats in parliament and they're growing again according to some estimates as many as thirty

five hundred greeks have committed suicide since the banking collapse started and the banks there's demand of the greek government cover the cost of the banks crimes but there are alternatives in iceland which was hit harder by the banks or crisis than any country in the world the people voted twice to tell the banks no explanted banks there's one of the government to make them whole but the icelandic people told the bankers to go to hell they fired the bankers and some of them are actually facing criminal charges and iceland with the relative autonomy of having their own currency like the rest of the scandinavian countries is doing pretty well right now the fastest growing economies all of europe a subtext of both of these stories is that inequality is rising quickly in all of the countries of europe that are embracing the same sort of austerity the republican party is pushing here in the united states and that inequality has its own side effects. meanwhile the nations that said no to the banks toure's into

austerity like ice land in scandinavia the scandinavian countries are not only doing fine but they're also seeing lower levels of inequality and thus their economies are doing better and they're not seeing the high levels of under arrest that showing up in greece. here with more about the consequences of inequality is marshall our back economist and fellow in economic economics for peace and security a research associate at the levee institute martial walk and tom thanks for me on thanks for joining us looking around europe in the recent i.m.f. projections are we seeing the collapse of the beginning of the end of globalism well i think that we've been seeing that the last ten fifteen years in fact i would say that the high watermark or globalization of the so-called washington consensus actually came in about the midnight hundred ninety s. and i think that the asian financial crisis was the first warning that shot across

the bow that things were not right in interesting the parallels with with what happened in two thousand and eight the same sort of talks that derivatives that essentially blew up the economies of those countries and then allowed the i.m.f. to step in there and act as a sort of way that mobility in greece today restructuring their economies and effectively entrenching the dominance of wall street several years and we're seeing the same sort of thing today so it's a long battle but i do think that the tide has stopped turned against globalization the worry however is as you pointed out in your introduction he said it's taking a very decidedly right wing populist tone and that's that's quite a serious concern for many of us. america was in greece today as germany is trying to push more austerity on that country without a change of course where do you think that is if there is no change of course where do you think the sauce thirty agenda is going to take your. well it's interesting she had seven thousand police officers accompanying her or rather of providing

security. for. her popularity or lack of it in greece. greece already is a barter economy it has ceased to function as a normal capitalist or even socialist economy even even profitable companies in greece get all the pain letters of credit because they're registered companies and so the the whole idea is that you'll have situations where profitable companies will be forced to say german larger german corporations at rock bottom prices in order to and they will effect on themselves into an even greater colony than they already are if it goes on in other parts of europe but i think we've got the makings of huge social dislocation from greece in itself is only about two percent of the euro zone's g.d.p. but a much greater concern has to be countries like spain or italy and spain i think you've

not only got the fourth largest economy in the eurozone but you've got a relatively immature democracy and i say that with no disrespect to the spanish but obviously as you pointed out this is a country that was run by the generals until the mid seventy's there was an attempted coup in as late as nine hundred eighty two and there are incipient separatist movements which are beginning to gain greater forcefulness and strain throughout the country in places like catalonia and of course the basque region has long had a problem with. terrorism so that's a sort of country that could literally find itself being torn apart we continue on this course of destructible stared marshall i have a friend in germany i had and he's deceased now but this was maybe fifteen years ago or thereabouts about the time of the year always being put into place and he actually now. only lived through world war two you had been a young soldier in hitler's army and i and i had very much for putin hated that

over the years and i i asked his opinion of the e.u. and the euro and he said you just watch this is going to be os winning world war two. is that the gospel germany is going to end up basically running europe. well they're not going to be they already knew that i mean that the irony is that this institution this currency union which was designed to prevent the domination of your by the germans is actually had the opposite effect and they've been more successful in terms of being becoming the most dominant power in in europe through world war i look you you've had three three attempts if you like to deal with the so-called german problem and i don't mean that by this to say that the germans themselves but the first time happened after world war one we had the so-called cut the judean policy which you pointed out where we basically tried these huge reparations and that to hitler always see the approach that hitler adopted didn't

work and so we tried the euro and in each time we always the failed and we see that when other ten germany's natural dominance is coming to the core again and they are becoming the cream of the power in europe marshall just a quick thirty seconds all we have left here but why aren't more europeans and why aren't more observers talking about the scandinavian icelandic model as a model for europe. because the scandinavian icelandic models well this again maybe one clearly because it's it's terribly it will destroy the political power of the bankers and as you point out they run the show right now the all these austerity policies are being in to implement the. bank bailouts and if you had an approach that was adopted say in sweden or norway and instead that same approach we used in the us in the 1930's name you would break the power of the banking cartel and you'd have a very very different sort of outcome yeah and it would be i think a much better one marshal our backup sank you so much for being with us tonight

of. it's true news on the show last week we told you the story is seventy eight year old great grandmother eleanor fairchild she was arrested for trespassing trespassing on her own property here you can see mrs fairchild alongside actress daryl hannah standing in front of tractors that are cleaning a pathway for the pipeline right through fairchild's three hundred acre ranch as tractors belong to the trains or at least are under contract to the trans canadian or the canadian company trans canada you probably heard of trans canada as

a foreign corporation which was one approval to build a massive toxic are sands oil pipeline right through the united states and right through mrs fairchild property straight down to texas in texas canadian and british and dutch oil billionaires can refine that oil and ship it off to brazil england and china making huge profits for themselves and for trans canada so how do these tractors get on eleanor fairchild's property well texas has a very lax eminent domain laws mean trans canada had very little trouble confiscating a large swath of this is for chiles ranch to build their pipeline and not a single local politician or a lawyer has come to her aid mainly because you don't say no to big oil in texas but actress daryl hannah came to her aid and they both join me now to tell their story on the phone eleanor fairchild and from our los angeles studio actress and activist daryl hannah welcome to both thank you thank you so much for joining us eleanor if i could start with you how exactly did this happen. how did it really

get out there on the eighth and how did it how did trans canada receive permission to build a pipeline on your property by eminent domain. an eminent domain in texas you know. take years and you have got to have no right. it's it's terrible what they're doing to property owners here they're not given a beer money for their property and they're bullies and they intimidate people and and they did i and it's just terrible what's happening in texas. seems that it is daryl how did you hear about on our story. well i've been following a lot of the opposition to the keystone pipeline since the entire pipeline was proposed and then postponed till after the election and when i heard that the

southern leg was fast tracked without the you know the environmental studies and all of the other necessary things and yet it still was being characterized as a public use project and i realized there were all these eminent domain abuses and people in texas were just like not having it i thought i would go down and meet with some of them and hear their stories and daryl hannah when you met with them are you finding that there actually is rebellion going on in texas or is eleanor the exception rather there is a rebellion all of throughout the entire southern leg of the pipeline just as there has been through the proposed northern section through south dakota nebraska and just as there is on the enbridge pipeline as well in canada there's also you know people saying not through not through our land not through our ranch is not through

our aquifers not through our freshwater resources so. there's quite a few people who are standing up against it the first nations in oklahoma. people are standing up against it as well as as well as many it's bringing a bit together a bunch of different factions both you know conservatives liberals tea partiers even because they're trampling our property rights in this country under the guise that it's for a public use project but there's absolutely no evidence whatsoever that this is for the greater good it's all for export which means it's all going to be for the financial gain of a private company right b.p. and shell and whoever happens to be refining this is a lair. and we end up with the toxic waste as a consequence of the refining that's right endangering our water and our soil and you know our climate of course. gets the canadians are smart enough to know they don't want the poison out there they're going to export of the us eleanor i'm

curious if you could tell us the story your ranch. how does how that so you know i was just wondering the backstory of your ranch how it how you came to own it it has been in your family what what does it mean to you we bought this in eighty three and build a. we can have an eighty eight we missed out here from dallas when my has been retired and we've been our dream home and it's a beautiful piece of surprise it's what it's a pretty piece of the property and would county texas as it has bring water it has a very red lake there is it that four hundred gallons of water a minute going on this land from the brain and in the end a cork is piece of property it's it's it's ever have been. and daryl hannah what what can americans who are watching this do to stop

this after property in this i mean there's also a global warming dimension to this you know the very big crummy. please refund well i think you know if people get informed that's the main thing then then trans canada and the politicians who are also in bed with them because of citizens united and other financial incentives then they won't be able to get away with the deceptive. lines that they're able to get oprah presenting this as some form of a mare american energy security or even presenting this tar sands oil as crude it is not crude as fact the house and ways house ways and means committee. make quite a differentiation between crude oil and then and shale oil or tar sands oil and this is you know tar sands oil coming from the canadian tar sands which is the most

destructive and. the most hideous environmental disaster on the planet you can even see it from outer space so i think for people to understand the climate crisis of course overpopulation and the the growing global water crisis there really understand what what threat. the pipeline proposes is there is there any possibility dural have that that this thing could be. stopped we have we have thirty seconds. we've got to stand up for our rights in this country we cannot let corporations and corrupt politicians roll over us that's the only way and eleanor just very quickly have you had any any positive feedback from any politicians no absolutely not we went to washington to meet with two senators and they we had appointments they they didn't show up their assistants came in and talk to us in the waiting room. i mean.

they they're all on the big money side there you go yeah they're all well we're all addicted to it it's daryl hannah eleanor fairchild thank you both so much for being with us tonight thank you ok thank you. but. in the best of the rest of the news for the past several months we've been following the story of since sata technologies a technology company with a factory in freeport illinois since saga is owned by bain capital the billion dollar pirate equity firm started in for mostly by mitt romney bain is now closing that freeport factory and outsourcing the jobs there to china something mitt said the debate isn't even though it's possible i guess in

a move that hasn't sat well with some sata employees and the local community yesterday workers as inside along with other protesters tried to block a truck from removing equipment from the factory and during that blockade three protesters were arrested joining me now via skype is one of those protesters who was arrested since sought employee debbie kemp and debbie welcome hello mr hartman how are you i am i am great thank you for joining us how many people showed up at the protest this in saudi yesterday olive's county about a total of. maybe fifteen and so is it was there an expectation of being arrested. you know we kind of we went into. testing thinking that that was a possibility we had a child of all the staff to chalk a week ago last monday and nothing really happened the police came out we all went quietly but wait kind of thought yesterday when things got going that was

a very real possibility you know tell me would be a tell have all been poured being poured dot com people can track it down on the internet but tell me about being poor what is this how did it come about and what's the status of it now. well there was a group of people that came to freeport to help the son sign a worker and to make. to make mr romney has possible contact to try to stop this shipping of jobs overseas they stated at a local hotel for two months and then they decided they were going to camp out at the students account if your grounds and the mayor gave them permission so they had been camping in their sense of temper twelve tensile actually a wonderful place you can live there for a long time very comfortable it was fire the wind there's chances. the atmosphere

is really determined and there's a lot of people there that really want to. make brownies see what's needs to be done have you gotten any feedback at all from the romney campaign or the romney family that the mitt romney has seen the damage that his company and his policies that he put in place or are wreaking on you and your fellow workers and might have some concern for you. yeah and i do have to clarify something i don't work it's sad i am just i'm a supporter of the employees they are and. yes they can and did actually make a statement and then of course deny any and. wrongdoing or any possibility that they had anything to do with these hundred seventy jobs being transferred. does so and they never did apologize to any of the workers and
